An essential part of having a happy life and career is when you keep a healthy circle of friends and those that support you in everything you do. Research has oftentimes told us that if a candidate is going to get a job that he is targeting, it is highly dependent on how many people you know in the industry or even the company you desire to work with. How well do you know about professional networking?

I want to believe at one point in your life, you have struggled with healthy networking (I have), certainly the list I’m about to give you will excite you. You can take note of the areas where you feel you need to work more on and improve your professional networking skills:

Check Within, The Close Circle You Already Have:

This is where to start from. There might be certain people that you presently have in your life that have the potential to help you through certain things. Do not overlook the potential of your existing circle. Create a new set of opportunities for yourself from this circle, this is just the basis of your networking efforts.

Network Anywhere With Everyone And Every Time:

Carefully search and join organizations that provide you with the kind of networking opportunity you are looking for, these organizations must have the capability of building your relationships and your connections, you must be able to make a meaningful contribution.

Listen And Ask Questions:

Communicating or contributing to discussions within your organization or group is a step further in enhancing your chances of connecting with like minds. Asking questions is a sign of attentiveness, making contributions is a sign of perfect understanding of the topic on the table. You should always ensure that your contributions and questions are genuine though, you don’t want your contributions to come off as scripted.

Be Proactive:

You can’t just sit around while people are busy meeting others, you will need to come up from your corner and meet people. You have to be proactive by putting in the effort that it requires, start a conversation with someone. We are not saying here that you should be at the center of attention at the event or party but just be yourself and connect with people in its most natural form, every other thing will fall in place.

Become More Interesting:

Here we are not saying you should become a standup comedian or that you have to make unnecessary jokes that might turn the other person off. By just asking open-ended questions which allow the other person to outpour their mind to you could just be all that you need to make that conversation interesting.

Leave Conversations That Seems Leading Nowhere:

You have no much time at your disposal, so don’t waste it. Find people you can have good conversations with. Once you spot anyone that might probably seem like a time-waster, find your way out of such conversation.

Follow Up is Key:

No matter the method you adopt when you are networking, follow up on those connections you have made is very important. You will need to nourish your new relationships. They are just like flowers in your garden, if you don’t continue to water the flower, it will wither away in no time, then, you will have to start all over again. So, as much as you make new contacts, put enough effort to also follow up.

Build For The Long Term:

Every connection you make has to be mutually beneficial to both parties involved. As you put effort to stay in contact with your new contacts, ensure you are building for the long term not just for the immediate benefit that you need to get from it.

Whatever You Put In Comes Back To You:

This is the best part of building relationships with professionals, every effort counts. If you nourish these new relationships well, certainly, they will convert to greater opportunities for you whenever the time comes for you to build or leverage on your contacts.

Finally, commit to improving your networking skills, put in enough effort and it will become clear to you that “givers never lack” is more than just a nice saying.
