DO NOT SPREAD OUT TOO THIN!
When you focus on too many things at the same time at the very start, you are split into different places. While your results may be good or fair, it may not be great either.
The recommendation is to start with one platform, cultivate, grow, and then move on to the next.
Fact is, when you do not believe in your product or know your target audience, then you stand the risk of running helter-skelter and jumping from one platform without proper harnessing any single one to deliver results.

There are actually three key things amongst others which must define where you concentrate your efforts on:
1. Your Product: What do you sell or what service do you offer.?
2. Your Target Audience: Who are they, where they do hang out? where can you find them?
3. Your Business End Goals: What do you want to achieve at the end of the day?
Clearly defining these 3 things helps you in deciding which Social Media Platform(s) you need to start with before moving to other SM platforms.

Here is how you can put the 3 points above to great use. You may want to write these down.
1. Product/Service
a. What content are you going to be posting or sharing?
b. What type of topics will you be writing on?
c. What type of pictures will you be sharing?
2. Your target
a. Think of your ideal target and profile them.
b. Do an illustration, picture them, and write down everything about them using the 5 Ws and H
i. Who are they?
ii. Why do they need you?
iii. Where can you find them, where do they hang out
iv. When can you find them
v. What are their interests
vi. How do they live? how do they behave
3. Your business end goals
a. What is the immediate business goal with your chosen SM platform? Is it to be visible, heard, seen, or is it to make sales?
b. What is the business long term goal? To grow, to be seen as an authority, expert, or professional? to have loads of followers?
And yes I do agree that marketing choices can get overwhelming but when you focus, concentrate, consolidate, and expand, it makes better business sense as against spreading yourself too thin.
